Reflection:
Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at a well in the middle of the day is a remarkable event. No respectable Jewish male teacher of the law would allow himself to be alone with a woman to whom he was not related, let alone a Samaritan. And this woman comes alone in the middle of the day to avoid her neighbours because she is an outcast from her community. Her sexual history made her so. But her meeting with Jesus does not leave her feeling powerless with nothing good to offer. Instead, it so transforms her life that she returns to her village in great haste as an evangelist. Here she fearlessly and shamelessly shares the Good News with the neighbours who had once despised and rejected her. Her story is recorded in the Gospel for all to read. And while we do not learn her name, what she has done remains for all time.
Finding forgiveness and freedom in Jesus Christ our Saviour can enable us to do things we never thought possible: to love those who may have despised, rejected or ignored us.
Prayer: Dear Lord, You are a generous and loving God. Help me to be so thankful for your love and healing in my life that I will do everything in my power to share that Good News with my neighbours, families, friends and communities without fear of the reaction.
