Reflection: Reconciling Compassion
Compassion and reconciliation are powerful words that embody relationships and deep emotions. Reconciliation is not only central to our Christian faith, but it is also a big deal to God. God offered reconciliation to mankind by sacrificing his own Son. As recipients of his grace, he now expects us as believers to become ministers of reconciliation in our world.
The story of the prodigal son illustrates relationships that were almost broken beyond repair but restored by love and compassion. When we choose to forgive and genuinely extend compassion to others, we facilitate healing, foster unity, and bringing about peace within our family and community.
At the Bible Society of Kenya, we reflect deeply on this story in our work. We reach out to individuals, families and communities that have suffered cyclic conflicts, banditry, political unrests, gender-based violence, constant insecurity, alcohol and drug addictions. These situations have resulted in broken families, broken relationships and a lot of trauma. Yet, as we share the good news, people embrace love and forgiveness, beginning a process of reconciliation in families and communities.
The Bible assures us that through Christ, God has reconciled us to himself (Colossians 1:20) breaking down all walls. Now, the Holy Spirit helps us to live in the unified humanity that God sees, revealing this truth for all to see (see John 17:21, Romans 8:26-27 and Ephesians 4:3-6).
Prayer:
Dear Lord, I thank you that your hands are always open to me, reaching out to reconcile me back to your will, even when I stray from the path. I pray Lord, give us one heart and one mind to walk together in the love and strength of your Spirit, in truth, reconciliation, and peace. Amen.
