Series Introduction
Physical, emotional and spiritual pain has been an intrinsic part of the human experience. In challenging times, we often lose hope, feel alone and lost. In such times the Bible reveals the character and attributes of God to a world that desperately needs him.
One of God’s most visible characteristics is his compassion. At the heart of the Bible’s message is the theme of love and compassion. God is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and overflowing with loyal love and faithfulness (Joel 2:13).
Thinking about love and compassion, the Bible invites us to imagine a mother’s tender feelings for her child. That is how deep God’s love and mercy is towards his people. It teaches forgiveness, kindness and empathy as essential virtues to foster harmonious relations and create a just society.
Love and Compassion are key Bible themes that form the foundation of Bible Society of Kenya’s work, as we seek to transform people through the word of God, especially those dealing with pain and suffering.
In this series, Anne reflects on different ways we can embrace love and compassion in our lives and how we relate and react to the world around us.
Reflection: Understanding Compassion
Further reading: Luke 10:25-37
Jesus’ command to “Go and do likewise” presents a tantalising invitation to reach out and care for the downtrodden and disenfranchised. The Parable of the Good Samaritan reminds us of what it feels like to be forgotten by others, lonely and forsaken, and invites compassion and empathy for all who experience it.
The one who shows compassion and mercy reflects the image of God. Maybe God comes to us as the one wounded or maybe as the one who shows compassion and mercy. Luke 10:29 “And who is my neighbour?”, God also comes to us as a reminder that the call to care for others frequently goes unheeded as we pass by the cries of those in need of help.
The reality of this scenario is still so real in our lives each day. We always have good reasons why we were not able to reach out to a person in need. We tend to give more emphasis to helping those who are close to us, our families and those known to us. Yet, Jesus answered that the good neighbour was the one who had mercy on the wounded man.
Followers of Jesus are called to live out the same self-giving compassion of God.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for your unfailing love and great compassion. In my times of need, you have shown me mercy and love. Help me to extend the same kindness and love to those close to me, especially those who are suffering. Amen.
