Reflection:
With a new year just around the corner, we begin to wonder what lies ahead for us. We all have hopes, goals or ideas of what comes next, but in truth the path ahead is dimly lit. If you’re facing uncertainty or big decisions, that path can often seem pitch black.
In 21st century life, our sources of illumination have become more varied but, sadly, less enlightening. The most common source, it seems, is the glow of our smart phones, lighting up our face in the dark, as we catch up on the news, scroll our stress away, or try to read the future through expert predictions. Rather than fix our eyes on God, we dwell on consumption, worldly advice and the doom cycle … I mean, news cycle.
Life is complicated. At times the future can seem dark. And yet, over the millennia, the radiance of God has never faltered or faded. As we look to him, we ourselves are illuminated and the path before us is no longer intimidating.
He illuminates our lives, the past, the present and the path ahead.
“The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall, I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1, NIV).”
He has never disappointed me, and he never will disappoint you. We can approach this brave new year with boldness and unshakeable hope because we have within us that which has overcome the world.
Have faith, take courage. Let’s cross over.
Prayer:
Lord thank you for your radiance, which gives light to all things. As I approach the new year, help me to fix my eyes on you. Help me to let go of old disappointments and fill me with hope for the path before me. Whatever may come, I know you are with me. Amen.
