Reflection: I’ve always disliked exams! I’d study hard and do well, but I always felt very nervous. How wonderful it would have been to have someone else sit the exam for me! That’s the picture in Matthew 4.
God tested Israel for 40 years in the desert (Cf. Deut. 6:13, 16; 8:3), and all but two people failed the tests. Centuries later, Jesus was “led by the Spirit into the desert to be tested by the devil.” The tests were the same as those given to Israel (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10), but instead of failure, Jesus passed with flying colours.
One nation – 40 years tested è Failed
One human – 40 days tested è Passed
And therein lays the good news of the Christian faith. While each of us has failed the test ~ “all have sinned and fall short…” (Romans 3:23) ~ Jesus comes and sits the test for us. On the cross, he destroyed sin, death, and the devil. All we need do is humbly accept him. On exam day (the day of judgment), we will pass with flying colours!
Prayer: I give you thanks, Jesus, for passing my exams and giving me confidence on the Day of Judgement.
