When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. Matthew 2:10-12
Reflection: The Magi were wise men who followed the stars and interpreted dreams. And here’s the amazing thing: God used what was familiar to them to lead them to the saviour – they followed a star, and the Lord spoke to them in a dream!
In this story, God demonstrates his unreserved love for all people and gives us an excellent example to follow. As you reach out to others with the good news of God’s love and grace, don’t focus on their differences, and don’t be judgmental of their practices. Instead, look for common ground.
Paul wrote a few years later, “…I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible…I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means, I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel that I may share in its blessings” (1 Cor 9:19,22b-23). As we connect with others, let’s look for the things we have in common.
Prayer: Father God, I want to be just like you. You love and accept people without judgment. You find common ground and lead people to yourself. Please help me be a bearer of good news everywhere I go.
