Reflection: Matthew 3:3 cites Isaiah’s prophecy about the coming of Messiah: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God” (Isa 40:3). In ancient and modern times, the building of a highway requires significant adjustment to the landscape.
The same is true of the human heart – it needs preparing. That’s what the people were doing when they went out to John in the desert – they confessed their sins and were baptised. In other words, they cleared the ground and straightened themselves out through confession, and they were cleansed by baptism – then the Lord came!
Today, be honest, confess your sins, and invite Jesus Christ to travel on your heart’s highway. When you do, the rest of Isaiah’s prophecy will come true for you: “And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together.” (Isa 40:5).
Prayer: Spend some time in prayer today, clearing the ground and inviting God’s presence to refresh you. Pray the ancient prayer, “Come, Holy Spirit!”.
