Reflection: Designed with Imperfection
“Alas, m’ Lord! Not I!” (Imagine a Shakespearean responding with dramatic surprise and feigned regret).
But imagination it does not take, to recall situations where you and I have felt far from up to the task. Who me? Nah. Sorry God. (with a trail of emojis)
…especially when it requires being vulnerable in public, or when it comes at great personal cost. OR when, like Jeremiah, it requires being the mouthpiece of God… to a bunch of ratbags (priests and prophets included) who’ve turned their backs to God and their faces to fake gods.
Reluctance: we empathise with the prophet and his excuses!
And, in fact, God doesn’t disagree. Jeremiah is young and inexperienced. But “It is the worker who is most conscious of his own unfitness for the task that is also most dependent on the power of God for success. His weakness is a channel through which the Divine energy flows, and through which, accordingly, the Divine Name is glorified.” (Alexander Stewart, Jeremiah: The Man and His Work).
Prayer:
Choose me off your shelf of imperfect vessels today, Lord. Dust me off; wash and polish me into the image of your Son. Fill me with your surpassingly great power to accomplish what you’ve ordained for me. Use me to reflect and honour you today…and into eternity.
