Reflection: I am your rescuer
God has an all-important message to convey in the coming pages, but as we’ve seen, this prophetic book begins by painting a portrait of a particular man. The crucial message won’t yet be revealed. The portrait of this all-too-human messenger first must be appropriately matted, framed and hung.
Jeremiah can only imagine the worst of what’s ahead…and no doubt that’s exactly what he’s doing.
God, of course, knows every twist and turn of the journey ahead—the opposition, criticism, rejection…and God says: “You’re feeling weak-kneed, Jeremiah? I’ve got you covered. I’m with you; surrounding you; encouraging you; rescuing you.”
I’ve just been to a gallery and again been wowed by yes, some amazing art. But my jaw often drops at the ornate frames. Here in these verses is one of those astonishing frames. Safeguarding this divinely ordained messenger is divine guardianship and protection. Jeremiah will return to this divine reassurance time and again in the arduous years ahead: God’s saying, “I’ve got you covered.”
Prayer:
Take our focus from ourselves and the worst we can imagine, Lord. If you are for us, who’s got a chance? Not a thing in all creation, can separate us from your love demonstrated in Christ Jesus. (see Romans 8:31,39).
