Reflection: The “five-finger” check list
When it comes to seeking God’s guidance, it is not an impossibly difficult thing. God has made it straightforward because God is for you and wants to do things with you.
If you had to summarise all that has been said about guidance, it is simply being honest about doing the things that honour God.
I am an ordinary person in the grip of an extraordinary God. Being ordinary, I can sometime feel I lack the ability to discern the right course of action. In these circumstances, God’s word meets my uncertainty with this unequivocal command, ‘ask God.’ So, I invite you to do so as well.
The five-finger check list outlined in this series is simply a tool to help you find your way and be honest with God. Here they are in summary form. When considering whether or not to undertake a course of action, check:
- Does it match biblical principles?
- Do wise and spiritually mature people encourage you – yet crucially, will you take responsibility for your decision?
- Do you have God’s peace about the action?
- Are circumstances offering you a good opportunity?
- For whose glory is the action directed?
Prayer: Dear Lord, my heart delights in you and your generosity. The bigness of your love is so special. Thank you for inviting me to do “life” with you… and for guiding me in the adventure.
