Reflection: Check 5 – Who will get the glory from this action?
The fifth and final factor to take into account when seeking God’s guidance is to ask: for whose glory are you considering this course of action? Answering this question takes honesty because humankind has an unfortunate tendency to want to steal a little of God’s glory for itself.
It would be lovely to be able to come to God with a clean mental landscape that is open to any direction. Alas, this is rarely the case. We often seek to load the outcome in a particular direction – one that brings benefit to us. The trick is to be honest with God about these feelings and your motives. By doing this, you are inviting God to either overwrite your feelings or to use them to guide you.
Unsurprisingly, Jesus gives us a wonderful model to follow. His passion was to do his Father’s will; nothing more, nothing less. He said, ‘For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me’ (John 6:38).
That’s a priority that’s never wrong!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, please forgive my ego. It is a wretched thing. Today, I nail it to the cross, and ask only for the privilege of being able to make your glory known.
