Reflection: The Four Lepers of 2 Kings 7
In 2 Kings 7:3-19 we read that lepers were cast out by the Israelites from the besieged city of Samaria. The lepers were starving and trapped by the besieging Aramean army. At their wits end, they took their chances by approaching the Aramean army. But on entering the enemy camp they found it abandoned and quickly began to feast, be clothed and even enriched by their discovery. But in words that resonate with the good news of Christ that is offered to all, they say “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news, and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let’s go at once and report this…” (verse 9).
The good news of salvation spreads across the city and the people of God pour out of the city to experience salvation in abundance (though we also read of how an unbelieving officer did not experience this salvation). God used the most destitute in the society to be the ones to share the good news. We may feel ill equipped, even marginalised, but we too can be messengers for the good news of salvation in Christ.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we pray Colossians 1:12-13: “…giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified [us] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
