Reflection: Boaz
The last of the three main individuals we are introduced to in the book of Ruth is Boaz. He was a relation of Naomi and a local leader of some substance. We see Boaz first recognise the need of Ruth and Naomi for food (Ruth 2). Then we see him respect the vulnerability of Ruth, and then his obedience to God’s law to act as the Kinsman Redeemer. As such, he took on the responsibility for the recuing of Ruth and Naomi by marrying Ruth. He does this with great wisdom and some sharp negotiation! (Ruth 4:1-12).
Boaz redeemed Ruth and Naomi to God’s family, a clear foreshadowing of the work of Jesus Christ. Jesus, like Boaz, was under no obligation to intervene and redeem us; but Jesus chose freely to do so and at great cost, the ultimate cost, in his physical and spiritual sacrifice on the cross. Let us give thanks and praise for our Kinsman-Redeemer.
Prayer: Father God, with the offer of redemption for all, we give sincere thanks for the death and resurrection of our redeemer, our Lord Jesus Christ, our Kinsman, who took on human form, and our Redeemer, paying the price for us that only God could pay.
