Reflection: Paul the prisoner
Only a few years ago, one of Bible Society Australia’s (BSA) overseas ministry partners was thrown in jail, due to false accusations by local leaders, because he took a stand for righteousness. He would not allow his Christian work to be sullied by corruption, and he would not be party to dishonesty. Thankfully this faithful partner of Christ and BSA was released and today he has a leading role in the Bible movement and is working alongside BSA and other Bible translation agencies.
Faithfulness is costly; it can cost us friendships, reputation, family ties and for many around the world it can cost their freedom and even their lives. The Apostle Paul faced a long period in jail, but through the trials and challenges he was able to say, “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear” (Philippians 1:12-14).
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, grant me the faith to trust you, that while I may never know why I am facing difficult trials, you are always with me and will use the trial for your glory. And Lord Jesus, I pray for those serving Christ who face persecution and even death today due to their faith in you. May they know your presence, hope and love this day.
