Finding Refuge in the Lord

Day 5 of 14

CEV

Psalm 34:7

‘The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.’ Psalm 34:7, CEV

Reflection:

We don’t talk about angels of the Lord much. But David devotes a verse in Psalm 34 to tell his readers that God uses these heavenly creatures to deliver and protect those who fear him.

This angel doesn’t just pass by and check in. He sets up camp. As the Message translation puts it, ‘God’s angel sets up a circle of protection around us while we pray.’

There is comfort here. When life seems so hard; when we feel weak and vulnerable, or when we need help in some way, take heart. The fact that God uses his heavenly creatures to protect and to care, points to his tenderness and love.

In the gospel accounts, we find glimpses of the work of angels. They appear at significant times in the life of Jesus — at his birth, resurrection and ascension. But perhaps David includes this detail to remind his readers that God can and does use his angels at significant times when that help is needed. As the writer of the book of Hebrews says, ‘Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?’ (Hebrews 1:14).

When Jesus ascended into heaven, he left a constant helper and presence in the person of the Holy Spirit: ‘And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever’ (John 14:16).

Whatever is going on for you today, there is refuge. Be encouraged that you are not alone. Jesus has promised that he is with us always (Matthew 28:20; cf. Hebrews 13:5). He will not take his Holy Spirit from us. And as those who fear the Lord, for all we know angelic beings are doing their part to ensure our safety and protection.

Prayer:

O Lord, when I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Thank you for reminding me that I am not alone.  Thank you that you can even use your angels to surround me and protect me. Thank you that I have your Holy Spirit in me, and with me. Fill me with your peace and calmness. Give me a settled soul today and a quiet trust that you are with me, and you’ve promised you will never abandon me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
