Reflection:
In our reflections upon Psalm 34, we have regularly noted the theme of deliverance and rescue. The psalm gives no indication that David has done anything that makes him worthy of rescue. He brings nothing to God except his desperate need. He sought the Lord, and the Lord heard his cry and delivered him.
This, of course, is in keeping with the whole sweep of Scripture — that deliverance is of the Lord; that rescue and salvation is a work of his grace. He loves to rescue the fallen, the wayward, the lost, the helpless. Because that is his nature: ‘the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.’ (Exodus 34:6-7)
When we turn to him for refuge, we find blessing (v. 8). We are without fear of condemnation (v. 22). No accusation can stick against the righteous. And that is us, we who are in Christ Jesus, who has become ‘our righteousness, holiness and redemption’ (1 Corinthians 1:30).
David tasted the Lord’s goodness, and it transformed him. His face glowed with inner joy and thankfulness. He feared the Lord and sought to speak and behave in a manner worthy of the Lord who saved him.
And we who have also tasted and seen that the Lord is good are also changed. Even when our hearts break and our spirits are crushed, we know that our Lord has drawn near and that a full rescue awaits.
Dear Reader, this is your God. He is your deliverer, your protector, your provider, your Lord and Saviour. David said, ‘Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together’ (v. 3). Yes, let us join in singing his praise at all times.
Prayer:
Praise be to the Lord, my rock. You are my loving God, my stronghold, and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge. I want to praise you and thank you that your refuge makes me safe and secure. Thank you that you are my deliverer, my protector and my provider. Let this truth fill me with joy, calm my fears and enable me to live today in a deep confidence that I am not alone, for you are with me. In the name of Jesus, my Lord, my Saviour. Amen.
