NIV

Matthew 5:9

‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.’ Matthew 5:9 NIV

Reflection: How to Reconcile?

It can be difficult to reconcile with someone when your relationship has deteriorated; it seems easier to fight and argue.

When people have this kind of disagreement, Mongolians refer to it as “disagreeing the word.” There is a Mongolian proverb which says,

“When the clouds part, it rains;

‘disagreeing the word’ leads to fighting”.

On the other hand, resolving differences and finding mutual understanding is known as “finding the word.” Having a mediator to help settle disputes between individuals is invaluable in reaching a resolution. This process is even more effective when the mediator is a trusted or close friend of the conflicting parties. Through the mediation of such a person, misunderstandings can be cleared, paving the way for peaceful relations to be restored.

We know from the Bible that “… there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1Timothy 2:5, NIV) and also that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14).

Jesus is the Father’s only beloved son, he is the Word who became flesh, and he became our beloved friend as well. “For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:14, NIV).

If we really, in our relationships with one another, “have the same mindset as Christ Jesus,” (Philippians 2:5) and talk with God and with others, then as Matthew 5:9 says, ” Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

Prayer:

God, help me to live each day remembering that I am reconciled to you through your Son.
