Reflection: Jesus is the real King
In this passage, Jesus is clearly being misunderstood. He’s been arrested, he’s been questioned, he’s been taken from this court to that, he’s been tried six times throughout the night (which was illegal in his time) and at the end of all this, Pilate responds to Jesus’ declaration of kingdom by profoundly stating, “You are a king then!”
Despite his pronouncement of Jesus as a king, Pilate is blind to the truth. Jesus follows up with a gospel statement bearing witness to why he was born: to testify to truth. Jesus’ followers are those on the side of truth, who listen to him and know Jesus didn’t come as a political king, as an army general, nor did he come to overthrow the Romans, but rather he came to establish God’s kingdom with God’s people under God’s rule. A kingdom where sin has been completely dealt with. He is the King and we are his subjects. We are under his rule and Jesus rules with peace, justice, righteousness, love and grace and we follow him because he is a wonderful king. He’s the deliverer who saves us from death and condemnation. He saves us from sin. Jesus is the real King.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, we do pray that Jesus will be understood as the true eternal and mighty King. Jesus who rules and sits on the right-hand side of the Father, who rules with justice and righteousness, is loving and majestic. He’s glorious and he’s, our Saviour. He is the one we trust in. Help us, Lord, to surrender to him. Help us to submit to him. Help us to trust him every step of the way, because he’s a godly king, and he’s God himself, and he’s, our Saviour. In your name we pray, Amen.
