Series Introduction
As we look at passages from the Gospels of Matthew and John, this series will help us consider the person of Jesus: his words and actions, and how he invites us to follow him. Following Jesus is an exciting journey that begins when we open our hearts and trust in him for salvation from our sins through his death on the cross. Following Jesus is also a daily journey of obeying his word, being in fellowship with other believers and trusting in him no matter the cost.
Reflection: God’s family
Australians value family very much – to some, “family is everything”. In these few verses Jesus shows us what a true family looks like. At first it may appear that he is denying his family or that he doesn’t care about his family, but if you dig a little deeper, there’s a greater truth in what Jesus is saying. When we become Christians and start following Jesus, there is often real opposition. Family can be the hardest place to live out our faith and many face animosity, cynicism, mockery, intense scrutiny and disparaging remarks. All of us face trials, and if your family doesn’t follow Jesus, there will often be friction.
With his biological family standing just outside, Jesus declares that he actually considers family to be those that follow him and do the will of his Father in heaven. What a great truth. When we believe in Jesus, when we truly start following him, the joy of being in Christian fellowship is much deeper than the bonds within a biological family. Believers know you, care for you, pray for you, accept you without judgement and encourage you as you follow Jesus – they are your real family. We have become part of God’s special family that derives its name from heaven. May you be encouraged knowing you have brothers and sisters in Christ, people that will stand with you right to the end because we follow the Lord Jesus together.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our biological families. We thank you for our family members who have come to faith, and we pray for those who are yet to come to a full knowledge of Jesus Christ. Where we are struggling and wrestling with unbelief in our families, we pray you will give us patience and grace to share your gospel.
Lord, help us to have a deep sense of joy knowing that we are part of your family – brothers and sisters in Christ. We pray for encouragement and ongoing fellowship in the gospel as we spur one another on in the faith. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
