Reflection:
The outcome of Peter’s preaching in the early chapters of the Book of Acts was not only individual repentance but also corporate prayer. The prayers of the early church shook the building and the world. World-shaking awakenings are always preceded by travailing prayer.
Each of the revivals I have mentioned in this devotional series were marked by individuals and churches who were committed to prayer. You may not have heard of John Hyde in India, William Seymour in Azusa Street, Jeremiah Lanphier in New York, or John the blacksmith in the Hebrides, but God has. (Look them up if you want to be inspired). Each one of them was instrumental in seeing their communities transformed for the glory of God through their prayer life. In the eighteenth-century revival in England, John Wesley famously concluded that, “God does nothing redemptively in the world except through prayer”. If we are going to see revival in Australia, it must be preceded by passionate prayer. Revivals require prayer.
Prayer:
Father God, I praise your holy Name. Thank you that you hear our prayers and respond in power. May a burden for travailing prayer visit our churches. Please help me to pray with greater passion and urgency. I ask this in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
