The Kids are All Right

Day 12 of 14

NIV

Deuteronomy 4:9

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

Reflection: These days, it is highly uncool in many circles to command anyone, ever, to do something. Even Christian churches or communities might be uncomfortable with the idea of obedience or authority. But try to cast refreshed eyes over Deuteronomy 4:9 and see how this section of God’s Word commands God’s children to not forget their God or what he has done for them. Further, those children of God are to teach their own children – and the generations after. The New Testament verse we looked at yesterday – Ephesians 6:4 – clearly echoes this sentiment, calling fathers to bring up children in the training and instruction of the Lord. Why I am raising all this here is simply to indicate something I see time and again in God’s Word. Throughout the Bible, God our Father, and his beloved Son Jesus, call the children of God to remember what they have done for us – and to cement it in our very hearts. Deliberately and steadily sharing that way of life with subsequent generations is part of the family of God’s unity and worship.

Question:  When do you take time to remember what God and Jesus have done for you, and then to obediently share that way of living with younger generations?

Prayer:  Almighty God, you have done so many amazing and praiseworthy things that my mind boggles trying to fathom them. But help me to remember you and your Son Jesus, and do not let the things of you fade from my heart. Amen.
