Reflection: “Away In a Manger”
When you think of a king, what goes through your mind? Perhaps beautifully stitched apparel or an entourage of people helping them get through life. We certainly see in the media kings and queens of this world living over-the-top lifestyles with the grandest of castles, maids and cars.
This carol paints a different picture of a king. Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 17:14), came into the world in a very humble way, born in a manger, with animals standing around him. God’s Son, sent from heaven, was born in a manger! This is not the usual way a king would enter the world. Heaven had a different plan!
As we step into Christmas this year, inspiration can be found throughout the lyrics of this carol. It was a humble birth of undoubtedly the greatest human that has ever lived. For all those who have accepted him as their King of Kings and Lord of Lords, we are not only his children; we can imitate Jesus too, by being humble and meek towards others. The Son of man, Jesus, did not come to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28). What a great example he has set.
“Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Lay down His sweet head
The stars in the sky
Look down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing
The poor baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
‘Til morning is nigh
Be near me, Lord Jesus
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray
Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to heaven
To live with Thee there
Take us to heaven
To live with Thee there.”
“Away in a Manger”, 1883
Prayer:
Dear God, grant me a humble heart like yours. Help me see people the way you see them. Thank you for your life and the love that you modelled so well. I want to walk in your ways all the days of my life. Amen.
