Reflection: “Silent Night, Holy Night”
As the years go on, it is safe to say that finding a quiet space to stop, reflect and hear the voice of heaven is harder and harder to find. Technology, multiple messaging apps, and a saturated media presence has nearly taken away the beautiful space where silence and solitude can be found.
This classic carol which we all are familiar with highlights how, on a still, quiet night, heaven made an announcement to the world: the son of God was born. “Glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ, the Saviour is born, Christ, the Saviour is born.”
Society may be busier than ever but, friends, the same God who announced to the world on that quiet, still night that his son was born, is the same God who longs to sit with you and have you enjoy the ‘silent night, holy night’ experience.
He is waiting.
“Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Saviour is born
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth…”
“Silent Night”, lyrics by Father Joseph Mohr, 1816 (translated by Bishop John Freeman Young, 1859)
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son on that still, silent night. Help us see the windows in our day to sit with you and hear your still soft voice. Thank you for your presence. Amen.
