Reflection: “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”
Charles Wesley, who wrote over 6,000 hymns, wrote this special hymn that we all sing at Christmas: “Hark! The Herald Angels sing”. This gospel inspired and gospel saturated hymn points people to the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
I cannot help but think, when I sing this carol, of the time when the angels appeared to the shepherds and told them of the birth of Jesus Christ (Luke 2:8-10). They would have been overjoyed telling the news to these shepherds of the birth of God’s Son.
Today, we might not have angels appearing to us. Instead, the world has Christ followers who can sing, shout and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ this Christmas. This carol is profound and based on the biblical story of the birth of Jesus, and we too can lift our voices and hail to the world that Jesus has arrived.
“HARK! the Herald Angels sing
Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on Earth, and Mercy mild,
God and Sinners reconcil’d.
Joyful all ye Nations rise,
Join the Triumphs of the Skies;
Nature rise and worship him,
Who is born at Bethlehem.
Christ by highest Heav’n ador’d,
Christ the everlasting Lord;
Late in Time behold-him come,
Offspring of the Virgin’s Womb.
Veil’d in Flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleas’d as Man with Men t’appear,
Jesus our Emmanuel here.
Hail the Heav’n-born Prince of Peace
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and Life around he brings,
Ris’n with Healing in his Wings.
Mild he lays his Glory by,
Born that Men no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of Earth,
Born to give them second Birth.
Come, Desire of Nations, come,
Fix in us thy heav’nly Home;
Rise the Woman’s conqu’ring Seed,
Bruise in us the Serpent’s Head.
Adam’s Likeness now efface,
Stamp thy Image in its Place;
Second Adam from above,
Work it in us by thy Love.”
“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, 1739, lyrics by Charles Wesley, adaptation by George Whitefield, 1758
Prayer:
Lord, this carol brings light and love into my soul. Thank you for sending your son to this world and thank you that we get to tell the world of his amazing love and grace. May the message of Christmas this year reach far and wide. Amen.
