Reflection: The voice of God
[Sing to God]…who thunders with mighty voice. Psalm 68:33
My family had a signature whistle. A little four-note ditty. We could use it if we were lost in a crowd. But the most nostalgic use of it was when Dad was coming home after being away, sometimes for weeks. No matter the time of day or night he’d stand outside the window and whistle those familiar four notes. Giddy and relieved, of course we knew who it was.
Would you know the voice of God if you heard it? Would he thunder or whisper? Would he speak your language? Speak conversationally or use Bible talk? Would he call you by name? John 10 describes us as sheep that know his voice and follow.
Little Samuel didn’t recognize the voice. But it did get his attention…and with the help of a seasoned priest he set about listening…for a lifetime (All the words of God that bubbled forth from his mouth proved true and were accomplished. 1 Samuel 3:19). We’re told this was in the days when it was rare to hear God’s voice (and see visions, see 1 Samuel 3:1).
Rarer still, to hear his audible voice today.
But pay no less attention!
Listen attentively to the comforting Spirit who, as Jesus promised, inhabits us, teaching and reminding us of all God has said. (John 14:16-17,26)
Prayer: Father, stir up the dust that’s settled over the treasury of your love songs. Jesus, may your bride – the world-wide church, be attentive, giddy at the sound of your voice, and comforted by your words. Holy Spirit, speak. I’m listening.
