14 day plan

Pay attention!

Day 1 of 14

NIV

2 Peter 1:21

21For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Series Introduction:  We worship an attention-seeking God.  Yes, you read that right.  An attention-seeking God…who knows he’s awesome and demands our worship.

What a turn-off that would be if God were like us.

But Scripture tells the story of God, deeply in love, drawing all creation to himself.

And that, brothers and sisters, is far from a turn-off…and not like us.

A weird thing about this epic story of being loved by God is how often we need to be reminded.

We’re a distracted, presumptuous and ungrateful generation. But losing focus, getting bogged down, forgetful and downright obstinate is not just our problem. If you grab even a quarter of the pages of your Bible, you’ll have an idea of how much of it is bubbling over with prophecy to generations past.  That is, in the words of men and women who were long-ago commissioned by God: Pay attention!

How does God get your attention?

What part of that story of radical love needs your attention today?

The Hebrew word for prophet is Nebi: to bubble forth like a fountain. Or as God put it to the prophets: I’ve put my words in your mouth.

Reflection: Prophets

As a girl growing up in a Muslim culture, the closest I could get to observing outside life was to unobtrusively watch from the wall surrounding our home. It was a fairly workaday view except for the naked ‘holy man’ who lived under a tree across the street. That certainly got my attention.

God’s ‘holy men and women’ were sometimes just as confronting in their manner and message. God’s wake-up calls sometimes needed to be shameful attention-getters – as scandalous as Isaiah’s 3-year stint of nakedness or Hosea’s marriage to a prostitute. And the messages weren’t just alarming. They were prolific. Fifteen books in the Old Testament are named after prophets, and most biblical books mention prophecy, be it in a dream/vision, poetry or sermon (altogether, Bible prophets – both true…and those masquerading as true – number in the 80’s).

Prophecy glimmered with the character of God and his plans and purposes. That’s why, though prophetic books won’t be listed in most people’s ‘these are a few of my favourite things’, they’re still part of Scripture’s treasury. Many prophecies have been fulfilled – especially in Jesus Christ. Which brings us back to the core of God’s epic love story. And can you ever get enough of that?

PrayerStun me Lord, with the old, old prophets’ stories… where sin bred disaster but hope anticipated redemption.  Where empires of the world staged their battles, but a new kind of king was coming to restore his kingdom.  Where ultimately, in Christ, God kept his covenant; acted in justice and mercy and poured out his Spirit. Stun me as your beloved – Spirit-soaked, spilling in grateful love and uncompromising devotion.

2 Peter 1:1-21

1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:

2Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

Confirming One’s Calling and Election

3His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

10Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Prophecy of Scripture

12So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. 13I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.

16For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” 18We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

19We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
