Reflection: Magnificent
If you Google synonyms for ‘magnificent’ you’ll find splendid, spectacular, glorious, superb, majestic, awesome, breathtaking, resplendent and wonderful (and many others). All these words describe our God and how Mary feels about him, having heard that she has been appointed to bring into the world his Son, Israel’s Messiah, and our Saviour. Naturally, she responds in a song of praise.
Mary begins, ‘my soul magnifies the Lord’. How does a soul magnify God? It’s by proclaiming how magnificent he is in all he’s done for us. First, Mary is conscious of what God has done for her personally. She was a young girl from a backwater called Nazareth and yet God raised her up from this humble position to perform the most glorious of all tasks.
Then Mary praises God because what he has done for her as an individual, he will do for everyone like her. To all who are humble, poor, and fear him (three parallel expressions) he’ll show mercy, he’ll lift up, and do great things. These great things are all Jesus will do in his life, death, and resurrection to save us. Our magnificent God has given us a magnificent salvation and so today let’s magnify his name.
Prayer:
Lord, we magnify your name because you show mercy to the poor in spirit, you have compassion on the weak, and raise up all who have fallen. We praise you for your saving grace shown to us in Jesus. Amen.
