Series Introduction: Why do Christians sing? Most other faiths don’t sing. They may chant but they don’t sing. Christianity is a singing faith. When the Spirit brings new life to people, he gives his people songs to sing. But why do we sing? Most people would answer, ‘to praise the Lord.’ That’s right, but is that the only reason? Over the next 14 days, let’s look at what the Bible says about singing as God’s people.
Reflection: Why We Sing
In Colossians 3 Paul has been describing life in the new age. To describe this life, he picks the metaphor of clothing. Before we became Christians, it was like we were wearing our dirty, old clothes. These were lives marked by anger, wrath, malice, slander, abusive language (v.8). But when we met Jesus, he gave us a whole new wardrobe. So, we clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, meekness, humility, patience and love (v.12). But how, practically, do we begin to live such radically different lives? I would have said: by reading Bible Society’s Daily Bible devotions, listening to good sermons, attending a weekly Bible study. That’s all true, but Paul’s answer surprises us. We teach and admonish one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (v.16).
Every week in church we hear two sermons. One from the pulpit and one from the music team. So, let’s sing songs that both praise God and teach each other.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the new life you’ve given us in Jesus. Thank you that, through knowing him, we have songs to sing. Thank you for the many songs that speak of your wonderful saving grace. Amen.
