Reflection: Song of Triumph
I’ve been married for over 40 years and so I know what makes my wife happy. I’ve served God for even longer and I know what pleases him. For example, I know the kinds of songs he wants us to sing. He’s given us over 200 examples in the Bible. Exodus 15 is the first significant song in the Bible. It’s the song that Moses, Miriam and the Israelites sang after Pharaoh’s army was destroyed in the sea. They’ve been miraculously saved and so naturally they sing.
First, they sing of salvation accomplished. The singers rejoice in what God has done to save them. There’s no salvation without judgment. Egypt had to be defeated and her army destroyed for Israel to be truly free. Satan had to be defeated, the power of sin broken, and the reign of death ended if we were going to be truly free. The cross saw God acting in love and judgment to save us.
Second, the people sing of future salvation: ‘in your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling (v.13). Exodus 15 is a wonderful, joy-filled exultant song of salvation, past and future. These are songs the Lord wants us to sing.
Prayer:
Almighty God, we praise you that on the cross your Son defeated all those powers that hold us in spiritual bondage. And we praise you that by your mighty power you’ll bring us safely to our eternal home. Amen.
