Reflection: Bowing down in humility
Further Reading: Genesis 42:1-38
The dream that the young Joseph had told his brothers about when he was 17 and a mere shepherd is now being fulfilled before his eyes. His brothers have come and bowed down before him! Joseph knows who stands before him, but they do not recognise him. Joseph haggles with his brothers and wants the youngest brother, Benjamin, to be brought before him in order for them to be able to buy food.
As the haggling goes on, Joseph weeps privately (v. 24) He restrains Simeon and the other brothers return home to their father. Joseph makes provision for them and puts the silver they have paid back into the sacks of grain they had purchased. Upon their return they are confused, overwhelmed and afraid.
It’s often hard for us to get this, but haggling is an ongoing part of middle eastern culture. Joseph is seeking to help his brothers to come to terms with their past actions and yet also to care for them. Joseph wants the best for his family. This is a great model for us as we deal with past hurts and failures that have impacted us.
Prayer: Loving God, thank you that you love us and don’t hold our sins against us. Thank you for your grace and mercy. Give us wisdom with the people and situations in our lives where we need both reconciliation and restitution, grace and mercy. Amen.
