Reflection: Fruitful
Further Reading: Genesis 47:13-31
In this chapter we see the ongoing total dependence of all the people on Joseph, and his organisational skills, to help both the Egyptians and Israelites survive the severe famine. Ultimately, through Joseph’s management, even the Egyptian people sold themselves, their land, their seed and their possessions becoming slaves to Pharaoh.
At the same time, we also see that Jacob has neared the end of his long life (147 years). In the 17 years he had lived in Egypt, he had begun to see that God was fulfilling his promises as his people now owned land and grew in number. He calls for Joseph to take him back home so he can be buried in his home country in Canaan. He makes Joseph swear to him that he will keep this last request. Sometime later when his end is near, Joseph is requested to come, and Jacob blesses him and his children. In Genesis 49:33 we read, ‘When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.’ What a way to go!
Joseph’s story is one of faithfulness, despite the many obstacles. His steadfast faith is remarkable, given that for a significant period he lived in complete isolation from his family and his people. God was at work to uphold and guide him and through him God was able to spare and save the entire population of Egypt and beyond. He was the means God used to spare and prosper his own people and to fulfil the promises to Abraham and Jacob, that they would be the fathers of a great nation.
In all of this, the underlying message is that what some did as evil, God was able to make good. Joseph suffered many indignities at the hands of his brothers, but God had a bigger plan and purpose in mind. God has a plan and purpose for our lives as well. It may not always be straightforward or easy but as we trust him, we too can grow in our awareness that he wants the best for us and for others.
Prayer: To finish, let us use the powerful words form Romans 8:31-39 as the basis for prayer:
Loving God, thank you that because you are for me, no one can stand against me. Thank you for giving up your own Son for my life; for justifying me; for graciously giving me all things. Thank you that the living Christ is even now interceding for me. Thank you for the assurance that nothing can separate me from your love that is Christ Jesus my Lord. Amen.
