Reflection: All the world came to Joseph
Suggested Reading: Genesis 41.1-57
Two years later and Pharaoh himself has two dreams and yet again an interpreter is needed. The cup bearer remembers Joseph! He remembers how he had interpreted the previous two dreams. In offering his interpretation Joseph is very clear that it comes from God and will be fulfilled because it is from God. Not only does he interpret the dreams, he proposes a plan to enable Egypt to survive the seven years of famine that would follow the seven years of abundance. Amazingly, Pharaoh now appoints Joseph to be his second-in-command to oversee the plan.
At the age of 30 Joseph is now blessed with a wife and family. The names of his two sons reflect his clear sense of gratitude for the way his circumstances have changed. Manasseh means ‘It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household’. Ephraim means ‘It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.’
When the years of famine hit, not only do Egyptians come to Joseph for food from his stores; now ‘all the world came to Egypt to buy food from Joseph!’ He has gone from prison to the very centre of global power and yet he knows and acknowledges it is because of God’s love and care for him, even in the midst of ‘his troubles’.
Joseph remained faithful even though he experienced pain, frustration and uncertainty. God had a bigger plan and purpose which allowed him to be fruitful and a blessing to many.
What about us? Do we desire to be fruitful as we seek to follow God’s leading in our lives?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that you have our best at heart and that you bless us with opportunities to serve you and to be a blessing to others. Help us to bless as we have been blessed by you. Amen.
