Reflection: Joseph sold off
Suggested Reading: Genesis 37.25-36
The sorry saga continues. Judah persuades his brothers to not kill Joseph but to sell him to the Midianite traders who were passing by. When Reuben, the eldest brother, returns to the empty pit, he is distraught. He has failed in his duties as eldest, and his father will be inconsolable. So they devise a plan to trick their father. They kill a goat and dip the ornate coat in its blood and return to their father. Israel (Jacob) is devastated and refuses to be comforted by his disingenuous sons.
Amazingly, the whole story turns on the last verse!
Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard. Genesis 37.36
All of us in life face challenging situations. Perhaps not as grim and hopeless as Joseph faced here. Yet we see that God is at work unfolding his bigger plan for not only Joseph and his family (as challenging as they were!), but ultimately all those living at that time! We have no insight into how Joseph is feeling or thinking at this point in the story. His life is spared, and he is carried off into a foreign land.
I’ve always said that we have to cling to the reality that ‘somehow, God is in control’. It may not always seem obvious, but he is. In your life today, cling to this precious truth.
Prayer: Almighty God, thank you that you have a plan and purpose for our lives. Help us to trust you, even when our circumstances are such that this doesn’t seem clear cut. Amen.
