Reflection: God’s holiness means that evil cannot be ignored. He will always bring judgement on it and will eventually kill it off. But here’s the thing: God’s judgement of his people in the Old Testament is always aimed at bringing about repentance so that he can bring blessing. Something of this blessing is beautifully described in today’s verse: ‘He tends his flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.
To the young who are still weak and vulnerable, anxious, and uncertain, this is what God says: ‘He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart.
To parents weighed down with responsibilities and anxieties, this is what God says to you: ‘he gently leads those that have young.’
Don’t you love the fact that he leads with ‘gentleness’ and carries the young close to his heart? These are the words of the God of all creation… and it is why we love him.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, young children boast of their fathers. When I read of your gentleness and compassion, it makes me want to boast of you… and trust you.
