Reflection: There is a world of difference between knowing about God and knowing God. Sermons about personal fulfilment or moral obligations will not teach it. Theological lectures won’t teach it––helpful as they can be.
No, to really know God, you must ‘shut the door.’ Shut the door to mere pretentious religious posturing; and shut the door to distractions. In other words, find and protect the practice of spending time alone with God in prayer, in silent listening and contemplation of his word. I have learned this having to be still on my bed for long periods of time in my fight with cancer. (It is one of the many gifts cancer has given me.) Shutting the door is what makes prayer both valid and effective. I promise you; God will meet with you… and you will learn to know him.
Prayer: Dear Father, my life is so busy that I find it hard to ‘shut the door.’ Please give me a positive addiction to meeting with you, that I may know the glory of who you are more and more––and be strong.
