Reflection: The invitation from God is to draw near (Hebrews 10:22). He created us so we could be part of his community, his family. So, if we’re not drawing near to God, we are not fulfilling the purpose for which we were created.
Sin, of course, is what stops us drawing near to God (Zephaniah 3:2). Nowhere is this truth taught more clearly than in the opening chapters of Genesis. There, we read of God walking in the garden of Eden, calling out to Adam and Eve to join him. But tragically, both Adam and Eve hid from God for they were ashamed of their sin and what they had become.
The Christian gospel (gospel literally means ‘good news’) is the story of God rescuing us back into that intimate relationship with himself. God is again calling out to you and me, saying: ‘Where are you?
Let’s allow ourselves to be found.
Prayer: Dear Father, you have called us like a father calls his children home at the end of the day. I want to say, Lord, that I hear your call, and that I choose to come home and be near you––for you are my Father. In Jesus name. Amen.
