Reflection:
When we lived in the Blue Mountains, one of our neighbours was an older, faithful man named Bill. He was very practical. He comes from a farming background, so he was good at making things and fixing things, which was helpful for us as his neighbours! But for Bill, his gifts sometimes seemed small. He wondered whether it would be better to have more obvious, word-based gifts in ministry. Then one year, Bill went to a reunion with his wife. It was for her nursing friends, so he thought he would be a fish out of water. But as they sat down for lunch, a gentleman came up to him and said, “Do you remember me?” Bill didn’t. The other man said that 60 years earlier, Bill had picked him up in his car and taken him to youth group, which changed his life, forever. The man heard about Jesus and became a Christian. As they talked, Bill slowly realised that it’s not always the big things that God uses, but our faithfulness in the small things — like fixing things or picking someone up in our car. God takes our tiny things and makes them grow as part of his Gospel story. And we, like Bill, continue to trust in God who is always at work, building his kingdom through tiny seeds.
Prayer:
Lord, I thank you that you understand tiny things, like acts of service, or faithful prayers … and like mustard seeds, you make them grow in your timing, as part of your Gospel plan.
