Reflection:
It’s a wonderful truth that we need to absorb every single day. God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, the Lord Jesus, that we might be saved and healed and forgiven — that we might know him. We can spend a lifetime getting our heads around that truth! Our friend Declan and his wife Cat recently had their first child. Before their son was born, Declan used to think that he knew what it meant that God loves us. He had read John 3:16 and agreed that it was wonderful. But after their son was born, Declan read the passage again and he was amazed in a whole new way. God gave up his only Son for us. Declan knew that he would give up anything for his new son, but he didn’t think he would ever be able to give him up. That’s how much God loves us. That’s the cost that God bore for us. It’s tender and immense and unfathomable. It’s beyond our understanding. It’s the wonder and power of the cross. It’s the love of God, on glorious display, for us. Jesus died for us who were unworthy. In God’s heart, we were worth it. There is no better news in the universe.
Prayer:
Lord, I thank you that your love is bigger than I can ever imagine. Please help me to fathom it in fresh ways today. Show me again the wonder of the cross.
