Reflection:
Our friend Theo retired from work a few years ago. Before that, he was an investment advisor to large pools of capital. His company was dealing in billions. Every day, he wanted to do a good job, to help the recipients. He knew that if he did a bad job with the money, there would be serious consequences for lots of people. Then, about a year before he retired, he started to wonder. How much of himself was being defined by the job that he did? Would he be able to cope if the important people stopped calling him? A year later, he did retire, and he told me that his favourite verse was 1 Corinthians 15:58. Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Trust in Jesus. Theo had always wanted to be steadfast and trustworthy at work, yet now he was realising there were new challenges in retirement. In retirement too, he wanted to be steadfast and true to his word and to his faith in Jesus. Being trustworthy was not merely important in the finance world, but it was important wherever he was — with his wife and sons, at church, and helping the old fellows with their boat. And then, of course, all the ‘important’ people stopped calling him. But it doesn’t matter. Theo is running the race, until the end.
Prayer:
Lord, please raise my vision again, to look to Jesus, so that every day I can stand firm, steadfast and true to you.
