Reflection: *As we continue this new devotional series, a word of warning for newcomers: much of Esther deals with R-rated themes. Some readers may find these devotions confronting.
Hegai is custodian of the virgins. We are not told his story, when he was enslaved and castrated or how. I imagine that he empathises with the girls: he too was taken, his body despoiled, his family and future stolen. I wonder whether he persuaded the king to permit each girl a year’s preparation so that she would be older when she met the king, and so that he could ease the trauma a little by preparing the girls for that ordeal?
Imagine you are Hegai. What would you do in his situation?
Engaging our world: Can you think of situations in which working for improvement within an unjust system might do more good than refusing to get involved? Have there been times when, unable to prevent great evil, you tried to ameliorate the damage?
Prayer: Loving God, we confess our complicity in economic and political structures that channel more and more of the world resources to assuage the appetites of those who can pay. Lord Jesus, strengthen survivors to break the cycle of abuse, build loving relationships, and look out for others. Holy Spirit, inspire us to live toward and embody your kingdom of love, justice and peace. Amen.
