Reflection: If you haven’t already, may we encourage you to first listen to the book of Esther from beginning to end here.
*Also, as we begin this new devotional series, a word of warning: much of Esther deals with R-rated themes. Some readers may find these devotions confronting.
One woman says no and the whole empire trembles. The intensity of the king’s anger reveals his insecurity. The royal officials’ consternation reveals the fragility of their power.
Imagine you are one of the king’s advisors. How might you persuade the king to learn from his mistakes, and practice respect rather than domination?
Engaging our world: In 2009, Kenyan women held a sex strike, urging the President and Prime Minister to “sacrifice individual ambition for the greater good of the nation” and “respect the people of Kenya by ending the power games that undermine dignity, safety and democratic spaces,” With both first ladies participating, the strike succeeded: the Prime Minister and President began talks within the week. Around the same time, a survey of teenagers in Nairobi’s slums discovered that the first sexual experiences of 70% of girls were involuntary. Women who say no are not always heard.
Have you ever been tempted to dominate your husband or wife? Have you ever felt dominated by them?
Prayer: Creator God, forgive us for our failure to respect all people, male and female, each one made in your image. Lord Jesus, heal those who have harmed and those who have been harmed within their most intimate relationships. Spirit of God, give us wise advisors who speak the truth, call us to account, and encourage us to follow you. Amen.
