Reflection: The scroll of Esther never mentions God nor explicitly reveals when, where and how God is at work. Reading with eyes of faith, we discern God’s hand where others see only coincidence. The scroll of Esther makes no explicit judgements. It leaves readers to distinguish between wisdom and foolishness, good and evil. This is true to life on both counts.
Imagine you are one of the eunuchs conveying messages between Mordecai and Esther. Do you feel personally addressed by Mordecai’s words? “Who knows? Perhaps you were [brought here] for such a time as this.” How do you feel?
Engaging our world: Have you ever realised that previous events prepared you for a dangerous and unexpected crisis? Did you sense God’s Spirit strengthening and guiding you? How?
Prayer: Creator God, unable to see the future, we entrust ourselves into your hands. Lord Jesus, you gave everything for us and call us to lay down our lives for others. Holy Spirit, speak through us when we don’t know what to say; guide us when the way is unclear. Amen
