Reflection: Mary, as the first witness of the resurrected Jesus, is directed by him to not hold onto him, but to go and tell others. While he is risen, he knows he must eventually return to his Father.
As Tom Wright says of Mary, ‘She is the first apostle, the apostle to the apostles: the first to bring the news that the tomb is empty.’ (Wright, John for Everyone, p140). In Jesus’ time, this was remarkable, and points to the fact that God is at work in and through all people regardless of their gender and social standing.
We should consider Jesus’ words to Mary: like her, we shouldn’t try to cling to Jesus and keep him to ourselves.
We can also rejoice that, just as God was Jesus’ God and Father, he is also our God and our Father! Through Jesus we now have full and free access to God as our Father and Helper. That should be enough to cheer our hearts today. Like Mary, we should go and tell others of this amazing privilege.
Question: Are you tempted to ‘hold on to Jesus’ rather than share him with others?
Prayer: Resurrected Jesus, we thank you that we too can know you as our Father and our God. Help us to fully embark on this relationship that we share with Jesus. Amen
