Reflection: All of us have probably had times when we have gone from tragedy to triumph within a short space of time.
What a beautiful scene is depicted here. After her encounter with the angels, Mary somehow senses that someone else is there, and turns around. The person speaks to her and asks who she is looking for. As she peers at the person, she thinks it is the gardener and speaks to him as such. Then it all becomes clear for Mary when she is addressed by her name. Immediately she recognises who it is and cries out to him, ‘Teacher!’
What a powerful and intimate scene. How encouraging it is to know that God calls each of us by name. Probably, like Mary, it takes a while to recognise him and his voice. When we do, it is a moment of great joy and surprise.
Question: What are you concerned or perplexed about today? Bring it to Jesus and ask him to make himself known as you seek to respond to his voice.
Prayer: Speaking God, thank you that you know us by name and especially that you speak to us in the complexity of our lives. Amen.
