Reflection: The Magi gave three gifts to the infant Jesus: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Gold is the gift you give to a king. This challenges us to acknowledge Jesus as our Lord.
Frankincense was one of the major ingredients of the incense that was burned in the temple as an offering to God (Exodus 30:34-38). By giving frankincense as a gift, the Magi made it clear that Jesus is worthy of worship.
Myrrh was used for embalming. You may remember that Nicodemus brought myrrh and aloes to prepare Jesus’ body for burial (John 19:39). In giving Jesus myrrh, the Magi were foreshadowing the fact that Jesus’ death would be highly significant.
Here’s the question: Will you also give these three gifts to Jesus. Will you honour Jesus as king? Will you worship him? And will you accept Jesus’ death on your behalf to pay the price for your sins?
Prayer: Dear Jesus,
I choose to acknowledge you as my King.
I choose to worship you.
And I choose to accept, with huge thankfulness, your death on the cross to pay for my sins.
