Reflection: Healthy table talk – listening*
I am not a patient person. I’m wired to get stuff done. I really struggle with the way committees ‘waste’ so much time going round the room.
Paul’s invitation to the Romans isn’t for individual transformation, but to a church, a body of believers. In this process of collective transformation, believers will together be able to test and approve God’s will.
I’ve learnt, painfully at times, that if we don’t make time to listen, we’ll miss what God is saying to us. That has taken an intentional ‘head shift’ for me. In practice (around our table) it’s meant slowing down lots, making space for the Spirit to speak, listening to others, not being made anxious by disagreement, testing our direction against Scripture, prayer, and more listening.
That’s a different decision making process.
How do you make decisions?
Prayer: Holy Spirit, please lead us to listen.
