Reflection: Stuck at the Kids’ table*
Do you remember that awkward age when you were old enough to realise you were stuck at or relegated to the kids’ table for Christmas lunch?
How did you feel when the invitation to ‘seat-up’ finally arrived?
It’s likely that the disciples were all under the age of 30. But as we look around the board table of Christian organisations in Australia it’s often the case that there is no-one under the age of 30.
Jesus was always aware that his time was short. But he wasn’t morbid or paralysed by this – he was radically intentional about ensuring his mission and message would live beyond his time here on earth. From the beginning of his ministry, Jesus looked for men and women who he could mentor and prepare to take the Good News to all the earth.
James and I were invited to the ‘big table’ early in our Christian walk, and it’s made us aware of the importance of remembering to get to know the ‘kids’ at the ‘kids’ table’ and actively inviting them to step up.
The church can be a beautiful and rare place in society today where intergenerational relationships flourish. When did you last have a meal with someone from a different generation?
Is there someone we could be passing the baton to?
Prayer: Father, give us boldness to pass the baton, as you did to us.
