Series Introduction:
What could we learn if we sat at God’s table? Over the next 14 days, Lucy and James will share their reflections on what ‘sitting at God’s table’ might be like, and how it relates to what they’ve recently learned about Christian leadership and governance from The Board Internship, which aims to raise up the next generation of Christian board members and leaders.
Reflection: At the Table*
The meal table is a rich metaphor for the life of the board and Christian Governance. The board members are the invited guests and family, the chair is the maitre d’ and the agenda describes the hearty main meal.
So much of Jesus’ ministry happened around a meal table (see also Luke 7:36-50 where, when dining at a Pharisee’s house, Jesus is anointed by a woman; Luke 10:38-42 at the home of Martha and Mary; Luke 11:37-53 at a Pharisee’s house; Luke 14:1-14 again at a Pharisee’s table; Luke 19:1-10 in the home of Zacchaeus; Luke 22:14-38 eating the Passover meal with his followers).
Sometimes I wonder in our sanitised offices, fancy boardrooms, and online ‘rooms,’ if we’ve missed a deeply relational and profoundly simple opportunity to gather as Christ actually intended: a family on a mission, in the presence of our Father.
Could the kitchen table be a better place to gather your leaders, team, friends?
Prayer: Father, thank you for inviting us to your table.
