Reflection: Hiding under the dinner table?
‘For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.’ (2 Timothy 1:7)
I’ve been challenged recently to really consider if in our current cultural moment, just like the disciples, we’ve locked the doors and as a church are ‘hiding under the table’. I’m wondering if risk aversion, strategy, and caution are actually just manifest fears dressed up with a pretence of (perhaps pharisaical) professionalism to justify a decision to stay inside and hide.
What if we’re playing it safe?
Too big to fail?
Too tame to try?
Too scared to sail?
What if all our organisational risk mitigation is stifling authentic Christ-centred mission and innovation? What if the cultural moment requires us to forsake safety and take some real risks? What would a theology of risk look like?
What parts of God’s mission in your life seem too risky? Where do you think your church or ministry organisation that you’re a part of might be playing it safe?
Prayer: Jesus, help us lead courageously into the unknown.
