Reflection:
Today we’re reading the Bible with Avalon Di Mauro, events coordinator for BSA, who began as an intern in 2022, and is also studying a Social Work degree.
Humility, gentleness, patience, peace and love. The recipe for a ‘perfect world with a cherry on top’!
But why is this seemingly simple recipe to perfection so hard to follow in our crumbling society?
In Ephesians 4:1-6, Paul urges believers to live in a manner worthy of their calling, bearing with one another in love and maintaining the unity of the Spirit.
As Christians, we are called to live in this world but not be of this world. The influencer and fame culture of our world is far from humble and gentle. When we are waiting in a long line for our morning coffee, we can be far from being patient.
Yet by showing love and compassion, and through practicing patience with one another, we can show the love of Christ to this world.
In my life, these verses have been an important reminder for me to make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in all that I do. I am especially encouraged to practice humility and patience when doing simple tasks, such as waiting for the train or in line for a coffee. By greeting others with a smile and showing Jesus through all my actions.
So today, which of these characteristics which Paul encourages us to enact — humility, gentleness, patience, or loving forbearance — can you practice, even in the simplest of the daily tasks that you do?
Prayer:
Thank you, Jesus, for your Word and for the guidance that it provides me. I pray that today you would help me to practice the fruits of your Spirit, and in everything I do; please remind me to be humble, gentle and patient. Please give me a spirit of love and joy that reflects you in all that I do. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
